What happens in your body when anxiety shows up

Sweaty palms, a racing heart, thoughts that won’t slow down. Anxiety has a bad reputation — but at its core it’s a protective mechanism: the way your body prepares to face danger.

What is actually happening

When your brain perceives a threat — real or merely possible — it activates the sympathetic nervous system. Within seconds, your body is given resources for “fight or flight”:

  • Your heart beats faster, pumping blood to your muscles.
  • Your breathing shortens, bringing in more oxygen.
  • Your attention narrows and your mind scans for danger everywhere.

Anxiety is not a flaw. It’s an alarm system that needs recalibrating.

What you can do in those moments

The first step isn’t to “get rid of” anxiety, but to answer it. A lengthened exhale — four seconds in, six seconds out — activates the parasympathetic nervous system and signals safety to your body. From there, we can work on what sets off the alarm.
